I decided I would try out my super high tech mt. biking skills and take on Rhetts Run, or what turned into Rhetts Mud Run.
Since I have done all of one mt bike race in my life I registered in the beginner class. Saddling up on my brothers Rock Hopper I sprinted into 3rd place on the start. The course was not in horrible shape yet as only a few other groups had gone out and the lines were pretty easy to pick. No major ruts had formed yet, so I found it fairly easy to pick a good line and stay upright. The 1st lap passes without any major issues and I was feeling good about how I felt and how I was riding. Then the 2nd lap happened....
The course had totally changed and I found it very hard to pick a good line and stay on the bike. Needless to say I crashed several times on the 2nd lap. Once was in the middle of a field where my front end slid out and I just about face planted in a nice muddy pool of water. What little bike handling skills I had went right out the door and it was all I could do to make it through. But perseverance prevailed and I finished the 2nd lap with no broken bones and a very muddy bike and body.
I finished in 2nd place in the beginners 30-39, and was satisfied with the result. I had fun and may even try another race soon. When the rain started I did not stick around to see how others finished, but heard that Nick got 1st, Mitch got 3rd in his class, and Celeste placed also. It was a good day for TRW!
