Ouch!
Man, the conditions were just perfect for the Greensfelder race yesterday. Too bad my legs and bike weren't perfrect, but that's another story. DRJ put on a great event. The course was about 8.5 miles with lots of technical, rocky stuff with a huge amount of climbing. I heard reports of 1000 feet per lap. Based on my experience, that's probably not far off.
I think there were 16 entered in the marthan class. I lined up with gears and front suspension for the first time in a long time, like maybe a year. The gun went off and we took off up a short doube track climb and into the singletrack. I was maybe 10 or so into the trail. The pace was high and the fast guys were soon far away. I yo-yoed between riders throughout the first lap. The first half is all technical singletrack with some rock ledges thrown in for fun. I was actually difficult getting used to a suspension fork again. That thing compresses when you drop off a ledge. Almost went over the bars a couple of times. The second half of the lap is mostly double track with a bunch of climbing towards the end. I felt somewhat slow on the first lap but the second lap felt better and I got into a groove until my seatpost slipped and I had to stop and fix it. My seat had slipped backwards also so I messed with that too. Felt real good starting the third lap until the end when my seatpost slipped again. Stopped to fix it again and managed to ham-fist the bolt and strip it - damn, hope it holds for the rest of the race. It didn't but the seatpost only slipped an inch or so. The fourth lap, I was cooked. No power in the legs and my knees were aching from riding with my seat too low. I creeped across the line. 3 hours, 42 minutes. 9th place in Marathon. Oh, well. So where was the rest of the red wheelers?
Meh. Next up: Dirty Kanza
