Well, last weekend was crap for riding, but this weekend looks like nice hot weather for Dirty Kanza preparation. Jessica and I have been discussing doing a long ride this Sunday, and she is planning on dragging Nick along as well. The ride will mostly be hitting the gravel roads off of the Katy Trail.
Here is the preliminary route...
A couple of notes -
We will be returning to the pavilion parking lot after 60 and 100 miles; similar distances as checkpoints 1 and 2 at DK. You can use this ride as a trial for DK trying to go between checkpoints without support, but there will be several places to stop in case you need to get food or water, apply sun block, drop a deuce, etc.
This ride won't be easy, but it won't be as manly or "epic" as last weekends ride. I'm pretty sure we won't be having to call anyone's wife to bring more tubes, and she won't get lost trying to drive the back roads because the main roads are flooded.
This ride has a good mix of everything
- mind/butt-numbingly long, flat stretches, but also some beautiful, winding country roads
- big climbs, that I dare say even the all-mighty Berry Vollmer himself may not be able to climb on a singlespeed; remember, what goes up most come down.
- A bit of Katy Trail, some pavement, but mostly gravel roads - some smooth, some rough.
The ride will start at 8am on Sunday, May 23rd at the Katy Trail pavilion parking lot. Join us for the whole route or just the first 60. Please respond if you plan on coming and I'll print out maps.
Questions for those who have done Dirty Kanza. Will the maps they give us tell us to turn right/ left, or turn north/south/east/west? WIll it give mileage between turns? The website says we have to have a compass. Are we not allowed to start without one?
