I decided to step back in time 100+ years and headed up to Amish country(Jamesport, MO) for the 3rd annual Chucky's Challenge. There were 22 riders that showed up in 30 degree weather with about 4 inches of snow on the ground to do the 38 and 54 mile rides.
Coach Long gave us our maps and instructions...
and we took the group picture...
(not sure what the balloons are about)
About a mile into the ride we passed a farm house and about a dozen horses decided to run along the fence next to us for a couple hundred yards. I guess they wanted to race or something. It was cool to see, but you had to watch the roads. Because if you strayed from the tire tracks of the few vehicles that had driven the road previously, you were probably going down.
I decided to ride the mtn bike for the extra traction, plus I didn't think anyone else would be riding singlespeed. There was one guy, and he finished way before me.
If you like horses this was the ride for you. If you don't like horses or testing your handling skills riding on snow and ice while dodging horse shit, this wasn't the ride for you.
These guys must be tourists, most of them had covered buggies with glass windshields, and just a small hole to use the reins. Off subject, but I did see one guy yakking on his cellphone while climbing into his buggy. I guess even the Amish feel like they have to use their cellphone while driving.
